Why Visit Rwanda?

Rwanda annually welcomes numerous tourists, enticed by its breathtaking scenery, comprising lush rainforests and rolling hills, as well as its rich cultural heritage and warm hospitality. This "Land of a Thousand Hills" offers a profound safari experience.

At the heart of this appeal is the gorilla trekking experience in Volcanoes National Park, offering visitors a moving and unforgettable encounter with the endangered Mountain gorillas, an absolute highlight for any traveler.

Your adventure in Rwanda will be organized as comprehensive safaris, comprising gorilla trekking, chimpanzee tracking, general wildlife encounters, and immersive cultural experiences, particularly in the eastern and northern regions.

The country has successfully safeguarded its quartet of magnificent national parks: Akagera National Park, Volcanoes National Park, Nyungwe Forest National Park, and Gishwati-Mukura National Park. These reserves harbor iconic wildlife, including elephants, lions, leopards, various monkey species, and a rich avian population. For the active traveler, the parks also offer thrilling hiking opportunities, most notably on the Virunga volcanoes, such as the challenging Mt Bisoke and the towering Mt Karisimbi.

Rwanda's unique geography shapes the stunning environments that host this biodiversity. Situated on the expansive East African plateau, almost the entirety of the country sits at elevations of no less than 1,000 meters above sea level, giving rise to its cool climate and lush landscapes.

This high-altitude setting features a central plateau and the dramatic volcanic Virunga Mountains in the northwest, with the highest summit, Mt. Karisimbi, towering at 4,519 meters. This unique ecological setting, which includes a dramatic descent towards Lake Kivu, positions Rwanda as a vital destination home to endemic species of the Albertine Rift.

Location of Rwanda

Rwanda is a relatively small landlocked nation in east-central Africa, covering an area of 26,338 square kilometers (10,170 square miles). To put its size into perspective, the country is just slightly smaller than the U.S. state of Maryland.

It shares its borders with four neighbors: Uganda to the north, Tanzania to the east, Burundi to the south, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to the west and northwest.

Travel times and distances from Kigali to major destinations and tourist attractions across Rwanda vary significantly due to the country's terrain and road conditions. The journey to Nyungwe Forest National Park is the longest listed, covering approximately 225 km and taking about 5 hours, hindered by winding roads, a 50 km/h speed limit, and heavy truck traffic toward neighboring countries. In contrast, Volcanoes National Park is closer at about 80 km, but still requires around 2 hours due to winding roads and lower average speeds. The drive to Akagera National Park in the east covers about 120 km and takes approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes.

Other key destinations include Butare (Huye), a 3-hour, 142 km journey that serves as a stopover for the Ethnographic Museum and the National University, and the scenic Kibuye on the mid-Lake Kivu shore, about 130 km and 3 hours away, ideal for a weekend escape. Visitors may also travel from Butare to Cyangugu on the southern Lake Kivu shore (155 km, 3 hours) for access to Nyungwe activities like chimpanzee and Colobus trekking, or take the relatively quick 1-hour drive (62 km) from Ruhengeri (Musanze) to Gisenyi on the northern Lake Kivu shore.

Afrika Panthera Safaris can tailor these journeys into beautiful vacations, specializing in activities like gorilla trekking, bird watching, cultural experiences, and various hikes.

Facts About Rwanda

Rwanda Climate

Rwanda enjoys a pleasant tropical highland climate thanks to its significant elevation and hilly terrain, which moderates temperatures year-round. While the weather is generally mild, temperatures fluctuate across the country due to variations in altitude. The capital, Kigali, located on the central plateau, maintains a comfortable average temperature of around 21°C (70°F).

Seasons and Rainfall

The climate is primarily defined by its two distinct rainy seasons and two dry seasons. The main long rainy season runs from February to May, bringing heavy, consistent rainfall. This is followed by a long dry season from June to September, which is typically the sunniest time of the year and often considered the best period for safaris and gorilla trekking.

A shorter, less intense rainy season occurs from October to November (or sometimes to mid-December), followed by a brief dry interlude. Even during the rainy seasons, however, the rain rarely lasts all day, and temperatures remain relatively warm, making Rwanda a year-round destination. Because of its equatorial location, the daily amount of sunshine does not vary much throughout the year.

Culture and People

Rwanda's official languages are Kinyarwanda, French, and English. However, Kinyarwanda, a widely spoken Bantu language, remains the primary language of communication for nearly everyone across the entire country.

Historically, the Rwandan population was composed of three main groups: agriculturalists, pastoralists, and the Batwa (forest-dwelling hunter-gatherers). Today, the majority of Rwandans continue to live in rural areas, with most of the population engaged in various forms of agricultural pursuits.

Is Rwanda Safe?

Rwanda is widely recognized for its high level of safety, boasting a notably low crime rate overall. While it is always advisable to exercise the same common-sense caution you would in any destination worldwide, visitors often feel secure exploring the country.

The primary entry point for most international visitors is Kigali International Airport (sometimes referred to as Kanombe International Airport), which offers direct access to the capital. Kigali is frequently lauded as one of the cleanest and safest cities in Africa and is uniquely distinguished by its minimal traffic congestion compared to many other major African urban centers, making it a very pleasant and manageable place to navigate.
